The Fool

The Fool by Warpaint

There’s been a lot of good acts with female lead vocals in music lately, and I’ve been lucky to have found most of them. From last year’s The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Dirty Projectors, to this year’s Phantogram and Sleigh Bells, I’ve enjoyed listening to each of their sound. But just when I thought the slew of female vocalists have stopped flowing, Warpaint released their first LP, The Fool, to mesmerize me once more.

But unlike the other bands I’ve mentioned above, Warpaint is an all-female act. Don’t let that turn you off, however, because this band isn’t like your regular all-girl band. They’re not an angry, trashy, punk group like the ones you saw in the movie Runaways. They’re not a corporate manufactured female troupe to draw in male listeners either. No, they’re not a “girl band”. But they’re a band that makes good music.

In a nutshell, Warpaint’s music is warm and tender, hazy and lazy. It reminds me a bit of 80’s new wave with a hint of the 90’s grunge. Think Joy Division sprinkled with a bit of Smashing Pumpkins. Think the XX. Although, compared to the XX, Warpaint’s music is much more simple. But that’s where the beauty of the album lies, its simplicity. The guitars and basslines here, while intricate and playful, isn’t overly done. The same goes with the drumwork that doesn’t go overboard and is only enough to pump the songs into life.

The Fool is one of the best debuts I’ve heard this year. Emily Kokal’s voice is reason enough to get this album. It’s just warm and enchanting. The album has some shortcomings, however. Since most of the tracks sounds almost the same, and the latter songs isn’t as good as the first ones. Nonetheless, there’s plenty of good in their music that will outweigh whatever shortcomings that have in this album. It’s definitely worth your money.
